9 November 2022 – We (Anikó Pető-Mordovski and Kelsey Frick) are announcing the launch of #TeamTranslator: a positive and supportive online space for freelancers in the translation industry to connect, grow, and learn from one another. The group aims to fill a gap in the industry and make a difference in the careers of freelancers around the world.

The online community is based on Slack and is open to all freelancers actively working in the translation industry. In the group, #TeamTranslator members can chat about various aspects of freelancing, such as seeking advice for difficult clients or asking for software recommendations.

There are several “channels” to group these discussions, including everything from #how-to-run-a-business (for business advice) to #winners-circle (to celebrate achievements with colleagues).

In a post made on LinkedIn, Anikó described the group as:

A place where everyone can ask for advice without the fear of being judged – and where everyone can chip in with their own ideas and suggestions.

Alongside Slack, we have also launched the group with a free resource: a rates calculator. The rates calculator, developed with the help of Fearless Pricing’s Filip Fučić, turns the traditional method of rate calculation on its head. Users will work backwards by first setting out how much they need to earn before determining the rates they should charge per word and per hour.

Kelsey shared her motivations on what led her to create the group:

Overwhelmingly, the feedback that I got from others is that they didn’t have the same level of support [that I did]. So I started building resources, joining groups, whatever I could so that I could reach back and pull others up the ladder with me.
